California Battery Recycling Fee – What You Need to Know
What is the California Battery Recycling Fee?
California law requires a battery recycling fee to be collected on certain products that contain built-in, rechargeable batteries. These are batteries that are not designed to be easily removed or replaced by the user.
This fee helps fund statewide programs for the safe collection, handling, and recycling of batteries, reducing environmental harm and fire risks caused by improper disposal.
Why am I being charged this fee?
Rechargeable batteries — especially lithium-ion batteries — require special handling at the end of their life. To ensure these batteries are recycled safely and responsibly, California requires retailers to collect this fee at the time of purchase on qualifying products.
The fee is state-mandated and is not kept by our store. All collected fees are remitted to the State of California.
Which products does this apply to?
The fee applies to certain battery-embedded products, including items that:
Contain a sealed or internal rechargeable battery
Are not designed for easy battery removal using common household tools
Examples may include:
- Rechargeable personal devices
- USB-rechargeable products with built-in batteries
- Other electronic products with internal power cells
- Products with user-replaceable batteries (such as removable AA or AAA batteries) are generally not subject to this fee.
When is the fee charged?
- The fee is collected at checkout
- It applies to in-store purchases in California
- For online orders, the fee applies only to orders shipped to California addresses
- The fee appears as a separate line item on your receipt or order summary
How is the fee calculated?
The fee is calculated as a percentage of the retail price, subject to a maximum cap per item, as defined by California law. Fee amounts may vary by product and are subject to change based on state regulations.
Is this a tax?
No. This is not a sales tax. It is a state-required recycling fee dedicated specifically to battery waste management and recycling programs in California.
